Membership Red Poll Cattle Society

The Red Poll world is made up of members from every walk of life and has links throughout the world. There are members of Red Poll organisations in Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Jamaica, New Zealand, South Africa, United States of America as well as those in the “mother country” of the UK and all will say that it is truly a family of like-minded people who enjoy nothing better than to get together and talk about Red Polls.

Events held for members include

  1. Annual Field Day - held at one of the member’s herds, a day which is very popular
  2. Workshops - held on various topics: finishing cattle; preparing for showing; fertility etc.
  3. Annual Dinner – a great social get-together which is held in a different part of the UK each November

Membership of the Society runs from 1st January to the end of the year, with annual subscriptions being due on 1st January.  Membership can be renewed through the website within the members area.  If you have not received your membership log in details, please contact the office.

In addition

  1. Registering Members are entitled to register cattle in the Society’s Herd Book, subject to the Society’s rules, and to receive the annual Herd Book free of charge
  2. Annual Members may purchase Herd Books if they wish
  3. Student Members are entitled to register two females in the Society’s Herd Book, subject to the Society’s rules

Neither Student nor Junior Members receive notice of or can attend or vote at General Meetings.

The Society encourages the use of standing orders for membership subscriptions, as this greatly reduces administration. Also, Gift Aid greatly contributes a significant financial benefit to subscriptions and donations and all tax-paying members are urged to use the system, which enables the Society to claim back from HMRC the tax paid by members.

The system for registering calves is as follows:-

In order to register a calf you will need a prefix. Please let us know what you would like to use and we will check to see that it available for your use.

The fees for registering cattle are:

Heifer in the Herd Book of year of birth £10
Heifer outside Herd Book of year of birth £20
Bull £30
Transfer £10

the registration forms are available from the office. The annual Herd Books are closed at the end of February for entries for the preceding year.

To register bulls and heifers

The system is that all prospective breeding bulls must be weighed at 200 days and must attain (ideally) a weight of 250 kgs. (minimum 200 kgs). (Weighing to take place within 15 days either side of the prescribed date). Inspection at that stage is recommended but optional. The bull must be weighed and inspected before he is used and the weight on inspection will be taken into account but will reflect the management system of the herd and the dual purpose nature of the breed. Heifer calves, on the other hand, are normally registered within two months of their birth. The system for grading up is that the foundation animal must be a heifer calf that is red, hornless and of Red Poll type. A heifer born of the foundation female and a registered Red Poll bull will be a B Grade; her heifer with a registered Red Poll bull sire will be a C Grade. The heifer calf from a C Grade dam with a pedigree Red Poll bull sire can go into the Pedigree Register. No bull calves from grading dams can be registered.
