Melton Mowbray Sale Report 2018

Society Sale – 14th April 2018 – Melton Mowbray Market

It was good to see a good turnout of cattle from 7 members present. It was also good to see members who had come to support the sale, it’s an ideal opportunity to catch up, I don’t know exact numbers but there was well over 25. A big thank you to Joy Broughton who was instrumental in getting the sale up and running and in being the liaison with the market. She stayed overnight at the market to ensure all was well with the cattle. In general I think it was a successful event, however better prices would have been welcome but on the plus side there were 34 animals forward with a total clearance achieved on the day.

Top price was for Hepworth Conker MO, a 2yr old Pochin Fernie-James son, consigned by Richard Brookes, he was purchased for 1200gns by Rebecca Charley to become herd sire in the Ruscombe herd in Gloucestershire. Only one other bull was forward, again consigned by Richard Brookes, Hepworth Red Admiral M1, he was purchased by Ted & Sarah Clover to become herd sire in the Belsar herd in Cambridgeshire.

Top priced female was a cow and calf combination from Richard Brookes, Hepworth Olive with her 2mth old heifer calf Hepworth Aster. They were purchased by Jane & Guy Lambourne for 960gns to join their Wassledine Herd in Bedfordshire.

Multiple purchaser, William Laird, purchased cow and calf combinations and in-calf cows for his new Red Poll herd in Scotland. Average price paid was 740gns.

2016 born bulling heifers averaged 560gns. Top price of 600gns being achieved twice by cattle from the Thredling herd of James Wells and the New Barn herd of Trevor & Pauline Robb. The majority of these will join the Bluebell herd of David Dobbin in Staffordshire.

Yearlings levelled at 500gns with the top price of 580gns being achieved 3 times for cattle from the Hinwick herd of Virginia and Richard Dawes. Several of these went to join the Bluebell herd with the others going to 2 local farmers, one of which is going to join the Society.
