Nobody's Herd

Joy Broughton – Smallholder in Bedfordshire

The Red Poll is the ideal breed for me. They’re medium sized, have excellent temperaments and fit into my system perfectly. They calve unassisted and are first class mums. Their calves grow quickly on the abundance of milk mum produces.

Most of my animals are sold for breeding, but when I have finished a steer the meat is excellent and very much in demand.

The cattle graze conservation ground in the summer, then housed in winter and fed haylage but if the ground permitted they would be out-wintered. I have not milked any of mine but I know they would make an ideal house cow capable of suckling a calf and supplying a family with all the milk cheese and butter it could eat!
