The results and Judges report

Judge’s Report – Josh Brigg

First and foremost, a big thank you to the Red Poll Cattle Society for putting my name forward to judge such a prestigious show.   What a great honour and privilege as the breed had been absent from the Royal Welsh for such a long time.   As the breed was making its return, after a long absence, S4C, the Welsh TV station, made the Red Polls their featured breed on the Monday, giving the breed much welcome publicity. The exhibitors had, without exception, made a huge effort to bring forward a great entry of such high quality throughout.

The section opened with Senior Bulls.   Two forward, the winner showed himself much the best, the second being a little ring shy and not doing himself justice.   Again only two Junior Bulls, but led by what was, to me, the star of the show and my ultimate Male and Breed champion.   A very correct bull with strong male characteristics and a fine example of the breed with excellent locomotion.

The female classes started with big class of Senior Cows, both in-milk and dry.   This is where I found my Female and Reserve Breed Champion.   Leading the line up, a lovely clean cow with great length and a smart heifer calf at foot which should have big future.   Standing second was a calved heifer.   Not carrying quite the condition of the first but obviously putting a lot into the calf.   This calf was not quite the quality of the winner’s, and, unfortunately the exhibitor held it up too tight so it was difficult to assess its locomotion.   Only  two Senior Heifers forward but a great class of Yearling Heifers.   The second prize heifer had great presence and, having  initially called it in first, felt I had to swap it for the winner, when standing together, as it lacked maturity and finish for its age.
